Soda – It’s not just the sugar my friend…
In a study to determine the emerging connection between phosphate toxicity and aging, mice that were fed diets high in phosphate showed symptoms resembling premature aging, including growth retardation, sluggish movement, infertility, and they died prematurely.
Researchers theorized that high levels of phosphate may accelerate aging by increasing the rate of atrophy and cell death in various organs, leading to age-related complications such as kidney disease, cardiovascular calcification, and muscle and skin atrophy.
Guess what. Phosphate are commonly used in soft drinks to create that wonderful fizz. They are also added to processed foods as a preservative and to enhance flavor. Just great until you realize it’s making you age like a week old banana. So what can you do about it?
One option is to simply enjoy your cola but for a much shorter life span. Another is to start getting rid of nasty phosphates in your diet by choosing to eat more vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and healthy fats. It’s really not that hard to do, and trust me, you’ll get over the cola blues in no time!
